Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 25, 2026

The Why ("the App," "we," "us") is built to help Christians develop and sharpen their ability to engage with challenges to their faith. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights.

1. Information We Collect

Account information. When you create an account we collect your email address and, optionally, your name. Authentication is handled by Clerk (clerk.com).

Activity data. We store records of your debate sessions, training sessions, and Gospel practice sessions — including the topics, personas, scores, and debrief feedback generated for you. This data powers your history and statistics.

Preferences. Settings such as your default voice, difficulty level, and notification preferences are saved to your account.

Subscription status. If you subscribe to The Why Pro, subscription and purchase information is managed by RevenueCat (revenuecat.com). We receive only your subscription status — we do not store payment card details.

Class content. If you join a class, we store what you post there — discussion posts, replies, likes, and any photos you share — along with who wrote each one. This content is visible to the other members and leaders of that class.

Direct messages. Adult members of the same class can message one another. We store these messages so that conversations persist between sessions. They are visible to the people in the conversation. Our moderation tools do not display the contents of private messages; when a message is reported, we review what the reporter sends us.

Photos. If you share a photo with a class, we re-encode it on upload — a process that removes location coordinates, camera details, and other metadata your device may have attached — and store the resulting image in a private bucket. Photos are never publicly addressable; the App loads them through short-lived links that expire.

Device information. Standard technical data (device type, OS version, crash logs) may be collected to diagnose issues. We do not sell or share this data.

2. How We Use Your Information

3. Third-Party Services

The App integrates the following third-party services, each governed by their own privacy policies:

Conversation content submitted during debate and Gospel sessions is sent to Anthropic's API to generate responses. Photos you post to a class are also sent to Anthropic to be checked for unsafe content before they appear. Anthropic's data usage terms apply to that content.

4. Class Content and Messaging

Classes are private. What you post in one is visible to that class's members and leaders — not to other classes, not to the public, and not on the open web.

You control what you contribute: you can delete your own posts, replies, and messages. You can block another member, which stops messages in both directions. You can report any post, reply, or conversation, and a class leader can remove or ban a member from their class.

Images posted to a class are checked automatically before they appear, and reported content is reviewed by us. Our Community Standards explain what we act on and how quickly.

5. Data Retention

Your account data and session history are retained for as long as your account is active. You may delete your account from within the App, which removes your account data — including your class posts, direct messages, photos, and blocks — or you may request export or deletion by emailing rogersmi87@gmail.com. We will process emailed deletion requests within 30 days.

6. Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal data. We do not share your data with third parties for advertising. Data is shared only with the service providers listed above as necessary to operate the App.

7. Children's Privacy

The Why is intended for adults. Direct messaging is available only between adult class members and is not accessible from a child's profile.

If you subscribe to a family plan, you may create profiles for your own children, which stores the display name and age you provide. That information, and everything relating to our companion app The Why: Youth, is governed by our Children's Privacy Policy.

Apart from profiles a parent creates, we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

8. Your Rights

Depending on your location you may have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data, or to restrict or object to its processing. To exercise these rights, contact us at rogersmi87@gmail.com.

9. Security

We use industry-standard practices to protect your data, including encrypted connections (TLS) and secure credential storage. No system is perfectly secure; we encourage you to use a strong password and to contact us immediately if you suspect unauthorized access.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do we will update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
